What Is SEO Or Search Engine Optimisation?
SEO is about making sure the content and structure of your web site follows certain rules. The following information gives you a more in depth breakdown for the more technically minded.
SEO gives you the very best possible chance of ranking for your chosen keywords (these are relevant descriptions for your web sites content).
We divide this into three parts; content, structure and page loading speed.
The very first item and probably the most important is the title tag.
When you put a search into a search engine the title tag is the first bold line on the search results This is an example of our web site's title tag: Web Design Wakefield | Sandal Web Services. As we are a web design company in Wakefield who want to be found for web design, the very first part of the title tag is written for what we want to be found for, the most important key words at the very beginning of the title tag.
While the title tag is the most important on page SEO factor, the onsite page text MUST BE RELEVANT to the title tag. Having a title tag of web design wakefield and the entire content of the web page about chocolate coated dinosaurs isn't really going to work!
Second on the list is the description tag. Now it is debatable that this has any SEO value at all, but it allows you to describe yourself or products on the results page. This is our description tag: Web design and web development with options starting at £325. We are a Wakefield Company who create mobile responsive web designs. Call 01924 249188.
These few lines allow us to describe what we do, promote a special offer and contact number without you even having to go the web site.
Third on the list is text and images.
Text or content is what the search engines are going to "read" on your web site to let them know what your web site is about. Having relevant keywords that tie into your title tag let the search engines know what your web site is about.
Two things to consider about text on your site. There are few terms floating around this subject, the first being "Keyword Stuffing", the second is optimal content or text to html ratio.
Keyword stuffing is where you have a web site for arguments sake that is about our favourite chocolate covered dinosaurs and you decide to use the said term 200 times on your home page that has maybe 250 words, this is keyword stuffing, it does not work so don’t do it.
As for the optimal content, there really isn't one, ideally having a minimum of 300 words would be a starting point, the most important part of writing text is that it is natural and is not forced. Images can also help with SEO, simple things like the name of the image, i.e. web-design.jpg.
Header tags help to identify the important parts of your text. The H1 tag is the most important and should ideally only be used once. The preferred placement of the h1 tag is as close as possible to the start of the page text containing the most relevant keyword for the page, but again it should appear natural.
Next start with a paragraph and again if possible try to get your most important keywords as close the start of the paragraph as possible.
Emphasise important words i.e. your keywords by putting them in bold and or italics.
Lists too can be used to signify important terms.
The h2 tag is next on the list, try to use this as a variation of your keywords to add variety or a location for example.
Try to make your paragraphs short and easy to read. Break up long passages into smaller paragraphs. This makes your on site content easy to read, remember content is not only there to be read by search engines but real people too. Long paragraphs will lose interest from readers so your important selling point will not be read if it is buried 500 words into a paragraph at the bottom of your page.
SEO Page Loading Speed
This can be complicated to do, but there are some simple measures you can take to help improve page speed.
A web site is basically a collection of files that work together, the bigger the files the longer they take to load.
Check your image sizes. Having an amazing image that is 4000 px is pointless if your screen is only 1200 px wide, even smaller on a mobile. Also, dpi (dots per inch) if your images have been taken with a hi-res camera they will probably be set to 300 dpi, 72 dpi is the ideal resolution for web sites. Image formats, jpeg will compress the image to the smallest size, avoid PNG unless you need to have a transparent background.
There are a few web sites that will analyse your web sites performance and make recommendations for you, GT METRIX is ideal for this, simply insert your web site address and the site will give you a comprehensive report regarding what is right and any potential issues with your web site.
The above is a basic DIY guide to SEO, making sure these are implemented can make a huge difference to your web site.
